SUMMER READING PROGRAM

LOOK 4 TREASURE, the 2013 Children’s Library Summer Reading Program will begin at Livingston County Public Library on Wednesday, June 5. The Storytime program will be presented at 10 a.m. and the Craft program for children eight through twelve years of age will be held at 10:30 a.m. No registration is required for these Wednesday library programs and visitors are welcome. Children’s library programs will be held every Wednesday in June and July.

Of special note, for the first time ever, the entire summer reading program has been funded in memory of Irene Higgins. Her family requested donations be made to the Livingston County Library in memory of this loving mother and grandmother. Her three daughters, Debby Higgins, Pam Quick and Trisha Wilburn, decided that the summer reading program was the ideal memorial for their mother, who attended these programs with her grandchildren for many years. In addition, this reading grandma stopped by their homes with books to share on a regular basis. With this additional money to spend on the project, extra gifts have been purchased to give away at each program. Children must be present to receive one. Each weekly treasure will be given away as long as supplies last to children from birth through age twelve.

Registration for the Independent Reader portion of the program is now open. Starting June 12 pennies will be counted for books read and stickers attached to the Treasure Folders. Children from birth through age twelve are invited to join; those not yet reading independently participate by counting books that are read to them. Registration will continue as long as folders last.
Throughout the summer participants will be invited to look for the treasures that surround them but are often not noticed. Program stories will feature those who look for and find treasures from fossils to flowers.

JOB POSTING:  CHILDREN'S LIBRARIAN

Job Description- The Children's Librarian understands and fulfills the mission and goals of the Livingston County Library.  This person will plan, direct and manage all aspects of Children's Library Services.  This is a full time, 40 hour position that requires some evening and weekend hours.

Kindles and Nooks available for check out at Livingston County Library-

Leading the way with new technology, the Livingston County Library now has 2 Kindle Touch ereader devices and 2 Nook Simple Touch ereader devices available for check out to library patrons.  Library card holders 18 years of age and older, who’ve had a card at least 6 months can now check out an ereader for 2 weeks, with up to 5 titles preloaded on the device. Titles will be selected from the Library’s ebook collection.
“We’re excited to offer our patrons the chance to try out an ereader using the vast collection of titles we have available through our Missouri Libraries 2 Go ebook subscription,” commented Library Director Robin Westphal.
“Through a grant administered by the Missouri State Library, a division of the Secretary of State’s Office, and funded by the Library Services and Technologies Act through the U.S. Department of Musuem and Library Services, we were able to purchase these devices and offer them to our patrons,” Westphal continued. The Institute’s mission is to create strong libraries and museums that connect people to information and ideas.
Ebook use has grown tremendously and the Library’s Missouri Libraries 2 Go downloadable ebook and audiobook program has been a very successful program. “Thus far in 2012, Livingston County Library patrons have checked out over 2,600 ebooks and downloadable audiobooks from our collection,” stated Westphal.
“Checking out ereaders gives our patrons the chance to try the device to see if they want to purchase one for themselves. We also think some people will like the idea of having several books all in one device if they have to travel or sit at an appointment for an extended period of time,” Westphal said.
Devices will be available on a first come, first serve basis and patrons can be put on a waiting list for a device, much like a book. A valid library card, clear of overdue items, fines and fees is needed and patrons will sign an agreement outlining the charge for a lost or damaged device.

Book a Librarian - personalized computer or research assistance available at the Livingston County Library
The Livingston County Library is pleased to offer a Book a Librarian program, which will provide one-on-one computer help or research assistance with one of our trained library staff.
Use the Library’s laptop, or bring your own, to get help with computer basics, Microsoft Office programs, searching and applying for jobs, downloading books, or numerous other tasks. Don't know how to download books to your e-reader? Now's the time to learn -- just book a librarian. Beginners are welcome!

Reservations are required at least one day in advance and can be made at the Library or by calling 646-0547. A Livingston County Library card in good standing is also required.
